Apple Lion has Copy & Move

December 15, 2011 by

Apple has added a copy-and-move trick with the keyboard. It’s been a long time standard feature in Apple Mac OS’s to copy a file by clicking it and typing Command-C, then pasting a copy somewhere else with Command-V, but if your intention was to move a file you would have to go back and delete the original copy after doing the Command-C & Command-V bit. But now in Lion, if you type Command-OPTION-V, it will move the file to your specified location and delete the original. This is a great time saver for us keyboard shortcut junkies.

New Top 10 = Infected Websites

There’s a new top 10 list, the Top 10 infected websites in the USA.  It must be every company and webmaster’s nightmare to be listed as one of the most infected websites in the whole country. This list will change alot but if you or anyone you know are visiting any of these websites, let hope your antivirus software is working and up to date. Infected in this sense is used in the general sense to include viruses and other malicious software.

According to Avast antivirus they have tested over 800 million websites to determine the most infected sites by country, it’s good to remember there are over a billion sites on the web today and that leaves room for many other infected sites that haven’t been looked at.

If you do own a website or are thinking about getting one, security should be on your list of considerations and having an experienced team like KDWebServices and TechMan3k will help keep your website and reputation from being destroyed by these kind of attacks. Prevention and Recovery are two key strategies that should be in your website plan.

Something, people don’t always consider is they could inadvertently infect their own website from a personal computer by uploading infected files. This is yet another reason to keep your personal computer clean and secure, use KDWebServices PC Shield support page if you’re a DIY’er (do it yourself-er) or contact a competent technical person. Having a safe computer is a must when working on websites.

You can bet there will be updates as virus and other malware infections are not only dangers to personal computers but also websites. Hackers are constantly attacking or creating websites to spread malware as some names on the list do not appear to be sensible or legitimate. Website Domain Names are an important staple of credibility and most companies will fiercely protect their name, to avoid litigation some hackers will use names like xyzz3.com or even sensible names that don’t violate any obvious copywrite. But we know sites on this list have been compromised and while they are on it, my suggestion is stay very far away from them.

90# Telephone Scam, Really?

August 3, 2011 by

Yes, there really is a 90# telephone scam. Basically someone calls you at work and claims to be with the telephone company, testing the line. They ask you to either dial 9-0-# or transfer them to an outside line and hang up. Once you do this, the scammer can now make fraudulent calls which will be billed to your phone number. To make matters worst people are circulating false information about this scam, saying it affects both cell and home phone numbers. Of course they are saying they checked it out with phone companies, friends of friends, the Internet sources and of course Good Morning America. When you hear people say stuff like that and you haven’t heard about it, it’s probably not true. Personally I was 98.999% certain this was not true but with a little checking I found lots of proof to confirm my feeling.

How did I know?

At work most of us can probably transfer people to an outside line, but how do you do that from your cell phone or home phone? Call yourself and try it if you want..

A very quick Google search shows that snopes.com (one of the so-called confirming sources, says it’s a half truth and confirms it can only affect pbx type systems).

The email I got was warning us to not press 90# for anyone, just hang up if someone asks you to and that’s good advice. If they persist, contact the authorities and report them.

My feeling is always be suspicious of folks you don’t know asking you to do things and check these things out from reliable sources, for communications I go to the FCC for communications information..

The FCC warns us that:

1. Real Telephone employees won’t ask you to dial numbers or connect them to outside lines.

2. This scam only works on PBX or PABX phone systems

for more information you can get the scoop from the FCC (Federal Communications Commission)

By the way, this scam is not new and many systems have protections in place to protect against it.

Why You Must Update to Adobe Reader 10 Now!

The answer is very simple, in a word “MALWARE” or “VIRUS”.

For many people PDF files are thought to be safe to open, after all it’s read only (meaning no one can change it after it’s been created). While that maybe true, PDF files have come a long way from being simple read only documents. PDF’s can hold slide shows, multimedia presentations,  they can even include forms you can fill out and even email your answers back. But with all this power comes the opportunity for abuse in the wrong hands, that’s right hackers have created PDF files that include all kinds of “very bad things” to make our lives miserable.

Last year there  was a ransom attack PDF file circulated through email that encrypted the data of anyone who opened it and offered to release the data only if the victim paid the hacker money. Of course you should never open emails from people you don’t know or unexpected strange ones from anyone. (ALSO: Never give money to hackers or their programs, they usually will ask for more and not do what you want).

Also keep in mind anyone can create a PDF and say it’s something that it isn’t, or some clever hackers give you stuff and hide their malware inside so you won’t know what hit you. So don’t trust email or emailed PDF’s.

Protect yourself!

Adobe, the maker of  Adobe PDF reader (and Acrobat Reader) has created version 10 which has features to sandbox PDF files and improve your safety while reading them. You should immediately update your Adobe Reader if you haven’t already.

There’s no substitute for an informed/careful user, good backups, antivirus and updated software.

You can download the latest protection software from KDWebServices.com PC Shield.

Until next time, “be careful out there!”

America – He’s your President for Goodness Sake!

This just came in my email this afternoon: Definitely worth a read. Written by a Canadian, I am told:

America – He’s your President for Goodness Sake!
By William Thomas

There was a time not so long ago when Americans, regardless of their political stripes, rallied round their president. Once elected, the man who won the White House was no longer viewed as a Republican or Democrat, but the President of the United States. The oath of office was taken, the wagons were circled around the country’s borders and it was America versus the rest of the world with the president of all the people at the helm.

Suddenly President Barack Obama, with the potential to become an exceptional president has become the glaring exception to that
unwritten, patriotic rule.

Four days before President Obama’s inauguration, before he officially took charge of the American government, Rush Limbaugh boasted publicly
that he hoped the president would fail. Of course, when the president fails the country flounders. Wishing harm upon your country in order to
further your own narrow political views is selfish, sinister and a tad treasonous as well.

Subsequently, during his State of the Union address, which is pretty much a pep rally for America, an unknown congressional representative
from South Carolina, later identified as Joe Wilson, stopped the show when he called the President of the United States a liar. The president
showed great restraint in ignoring this unprecedented insult and carried on with his speech. Speaker Nancy Pelosi was so stunned by the
slur, she forgot to jump to her feet while clapping wildly, 30 or 40 times after that.

Last spring, President Obama took his wife Michelle to see a play in New York City and republicans attacked him over the cost of security
for the excursion. The president can’t take his wife out to dinner and a show without being scrutinized by the political opposition? As
history has proven, a president in a theatre without adequate security is a tragically bad idea.

Remember: “Apart from that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play?”

At some point, the treatment of President Obama went from offensive to ugly and then to downright dangerous.

The health-care debate, which looked more like extreme fighting in a mud pit than a national dialogue, revealed a very vulgar side of
America. President Obama’s face appeared on protest signs white-faced and blood-mouthed in a satanic clown image. In other tasteless
portrayals, people who disagreed with his position distorted his face to look like Hitler complete with mustache and swastika.

Odd, that burning the flag makes Americans crazy, but depicting the president as a clown and a maniacal fascist is accepted as part of the
new rude America.

Maligning the image of the leader of the free world is one thing, putting the president’s life in peril is quite another. More than once,
men with guns were videotaped at the health-care rallies where the president spoke. Again, history shows that letting men with guns get
within range of a president has not served America well in the past.

And still the “birthers” are out there claiming Barack Obama was not born in the United States, although public documentation proves
otherwise. Hawaii is definitely part of the United States, but the Panama Canal Zone where his electoral opponent Senator John McCain was born? Nobody’s sure.

Last month, a 44-year-old woman in Buffalo was quite taken by President Obama when she met him in a chicken wing restaurant called Duff’s. Did
she say something about a pleasure and an honour to meet the man or utter encouraging words for the difficult job he is doing? No. Quote:
“You’re a hottie with a smokin’ little body.”

Lady, that was the President of the United States you were addressing, not one of the Jonas Brothers! He’s your president for goodness sakes,
not the guy driving the Zamboni at “Monster Trucks On Ice.” Maybe next it’ll be, “Take Your President To A Topless Bar Day.”

In President Barack Obama, Americans have a charismatic leader with a good and honest heart. Unlike his predecessor, he’s a very intelligent
leader. And unlike that president’s predecessor, he’s a highly moral man.

In President Obama, Americans have the real deal, the whole package and a leader that citizens of almost every country around the world look to
with great envy. Given the opportunity, Canadians would trade our leader, hell, most of our leaders for Obama in a heartbeat.

What America has in Obama is a head of state with vitality and insight and youth. Think about it, Barack Obama is a young Nelson Mandela.
Mandela was the face of change and charity for all of Africa but he was too old to make it happen. The great things Obama might do for America
and the world could go on for decades after he’s out of office.

America, you know not what you have.

The man is being challenged unfairly, characterized with vulgarity and treated with the kind of deep disrespect to which no previous president
was subjected. It’s like the day after electing the first black man to be president, thereby electrifying the world with hope and joy,
Americans sobered up and decided the bad old days were better.

President Obama may fail but it will not be a Richard Nixon default fraught with larceny and lies. President Obama, given a fair chance,
will surely succeed but his triumph will never come with a Bill Clinton caveat – “if only he’d got control of that zipper.”

Please. Give the man a fair, fighting chance. This incivility toward the leader who won over Americans and gave hope to billions of people
around the world that their lives could be enhanced by his example, just naturally has to stop.

Believe me, when Americans drive by the White House and see a sign on the lawn that reads: “No shirt. No shoes. No service,” they’ll realize
this new national rudeness has gone way, way too far.

Dreamweaver Site Cache Crash Fix

May 12, 2010 by

I had the same problem and here is a fix.

Dreamweaver [version 9] CS3 will rebuild the site cache if it cannot find the files, but if the files are corrupted in any way Dreamweaver will close as soon as it hits the bad files. Sometimes the files in question aren’t really bad, there a reported bug that if files are 8k in size with css Dreamweaver will not open.

If Dreamweaver appears to quit when processing the site cache here’s how to force a rebuild in windows:

Dreamweaver’s cache is kept in a file in its Configuration folder. That file name is different for Mac or Windows:

* For Windows it is WinFileCache-.dat
* For MAC it is MacFileCache-.dat

Deleting or renaming that file causes Dreamweaver to create a new one.
Location of the cache file differs for each version of Dreamweaver and operating system.

Here is a list of locations depending on DW version and OS:

* For Dreamweaver CS4:

o Vista/Win7: C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Dreamweaver CS4\\Configuration
o XP: C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Adobe\Dreamweaver CS4\Configuration\
o MAC: Macintosh HD : Users : : Library : Application Support : Adobe : Dreamweaver CS4 : : Configuration :

* For Dreamweaver CS3:

o Vista/Win7: C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Dreamweaver 9\Configuration
o XP: C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Adobe\Dreamweaver 9\Configuration\
o MAC: Macintosh HD : Users : : Library : Application Support : Adobe : Dreamweaver 9 : Configuration :

* For Dreamweaver 8 and below:

o Vista/Win7: C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Macromedia\Dreamweaver \Configuration\
o XP: C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Macromedia\Dreamweaver \Configuration\
o MAC: Macintosh HD : Users : : Library : Application Support : Macromedia : Dreamweaver : Configuration :

Be aware that folders AppData in Vista and Application Data in Win XP are normally hidden. In order to unhidden them you need to:

* For Vista/Win7:

o Open new Windows Explorer window.
o Press Alt to reveal the text menu.
o Choose “Folder Options” from “Tools” menu. In the pop-up window go to “View” tab.
o In the list of options find “Hidden files and folders” section and mark “Show hidden files and folders”. Press ok to Apply the change and to cloce the pop-up.

* For Windows XP:

o Same as for Vista except that you don’t need to press Alt in order to reveal the text menu. It is always visible

-both those will force Dreamweaver to rebuild the site cache or it’s configuration

Are Password Changes a waste of time?

April 15, 2010 by

It’s one of the most hated popups in the computer user’s world.. The message says “You must change your password to continue” and users really hate it. Most companies now require some frequency for passwords to be changed but does that move really provide increased security?

A recent study by Microsoft shows that it really doe not provide better the security your Technology department has hoped for, because once a password is compromised thieves use it almost right away and don’t wait 30, 60 or 90 days for it to expire.

But here’s the Boston Globe article that says “Please don’t change that password..”

My bottom line:

1. Don’t use those super simple passwords like “password” (there are over 100 of these.. I’ll provide a password test later)
2. Change your password immediately if you even think it might have been compromised (don’t wait for something bad to happen)
3. It doesn’t help to keep changing passwords, especially if you have to have them written down everywhere (at work & home) It’s better to
have 2-3 good ones that you can remember, than 8 you have to have on sticky notes..
4. Don’t use one password for everything, it would be like one key that opens your entire life (like losing your wallet or purse with everything in it)
5. If you can’t remember all your passwords, remember 1 good one and use a secure password manager software for the others (more on this later)
